Cadets are required to learn and retain a baseline knowledge of facts, regulations and citizenship. Knowledge is perishable, therefore the cadets must remain proficient in this knowledge. They shall complete online exams via the 'EXAMS' link located above at least once every grading period (9 weeks). Although cadets are reminded daily to complete these exams so their grade does not suffer, some cadets procrastinate in studying. So at mid-term, the instructors assigns a '0' score for all untaken exams in order to provide a forecast of the potential NJROTC grades should they fail their mission by not completing them by the end of the 9-week grading period. The exams are open book and resources are provided in the classroom and at the 'RESOURCES' link in the right-hand margin of the web pages. NOTE: Proficiency in this knowledge is a routine academic requirement established by the Senior Naval Science Instructor and subject to verbal exam during official NJROTC Area Manager inspections. To promote to the next RANK (e.g., Seaman to Petty Officer Third Class), cadets must demonstrate they REALLY care to know their stuff by getting a 90% or better on every exam—and then pass a similar exam CLOSED book during designated promotion Examination Boards (every 9 weeks). This is to ensure they have the knowledge credibility to lead. Leaders must 'know their business' well.
